Colour plays an important role in emotion and memory. It is a trigger that readily identifies a soft drink brand, sports team or a piece of equipment. Krylon offers Farm and Implement Paint that matches the classic colours of John Deere Green and Yellow, as well as other well-known farm machinery brands. This paint can bring new life to a collection that has sentimental value, like this antique pedal tractor, passing on your affinity to the next generation.
What You Need
- Krylon Farm and Implement Paint - John Deere Green and John Deere Yellow
- Automotive primer (optional)
- Gloves (optional)
- Wire brush, orbital sander, rust reformer, rust primer, (if rust present)
- Masking tape and plastic
How to Do It

Step 1: Using an all-purpose cleaner, thoroughly clean the inside and outside of your surfaces to remove dirt, oil and debris. Depending on the condition of the object you’re painting, you may need to do some additional work to smooth surfaces or remove rust. Use a wire brush and sander to reduce or remove rust, smooth a paint chip or just help paint adhesion.

Step 2: Using tape and plastic, mask all areas that you don’t want to paint. Krylon Farm and Implement Paint has great adhesion properties and doesn’t typically need a primer, however we used an automotive primer to fill in some divots and ensure adhesion to the unknown original paint. For rust, use a rust reformer – which chemically changes the rust, making it paintable and preventing future rust – followed by a rust primer. Follow instructions for drying time listed on products before moving onto the next step.

Step 3: Shake the aerosol can for at least one minute to ensure proper colour distribution. We recommend testing the spray on a piece of paper or the drop cloth prior to painting your object. For best results, hold the can six to eight inches away from the surface and spray in a sweeping motion. Using smooth, even strokes in light coats will help prevent drips, reduce large areas of concentrated colour and improve drying time. Apply additional coats if necessary. If you want additional protection, you can add an automotive clear coat to the surface afterwards.

Step 4: To finish this project, speak to your local John Deere dealer. It may have decals, such as for the front grill, that can be applied and make the tractor look good as new.
