Seed treatments are an important consideration for cereal and pulse growers – and for good reason. With the extra protection from seed- and soil-borne diseases, you can kick-start crops and protect your investments.
Treated, certified seed is available at Co-op Agro Centres across Western Canada. However, if you plan to use farm-saved cereal seed, on-farm treatments are convenient and effective.
Evolution of technology
There are a variety of seed-treating systems available today with different controls, nozzles and application methods – even mobile units for on-the-go treating. They range from the most basic drip and gravity-fed applicators, which can be installed or built at minimal expense, to higher-end systems that can treat up to 30 bushels per minute and offer precise coverage.
The system you choose will depend on the kind of seed, the types of augers or conveyors and the expected results.

Precision applications
Seed treaters start at a few thousand dollars.
At the top end, the most accurate and user-friendly setups employ electric- or gas-powered pressurized systems and electronic controls.
With nozzles that are less likely to plug and technology to read and control the seed rate, you can better calibrate equipment for the product and seed type. The end result is a consistent flow and increased accuracy, meaning you can be confident that you are not over- or under-treating.
