New steel styles add flair to any farm

Steel-clad farm buildings have long been part of the landscape in Western Canada. Farmers have counted on steel’s strength and durability for decades.

Back in the day, steel delivered the basics but not much more. The good news is that options for steel buildings have increased in recent years. Make an impression by using modern colours, textures and profiles to customize a new or existing structure. Farm buildings can match your home – or vice-versa, using residential products – to help create an attractive yard.

Co-op’s two steel roofing and siding suppliers – Vicwest and Westman Steel – have made great advancements when it comes to product innovation. At Norquay Co-op in Saskatchewan, Lumber Manager Rod Thiessen enjoys introducing customers to the many options now available:

  • Roofs – Asphalt shingles have been the go-to for farm buildings, however steel offers incredible durability and longevity. When it comes to Mother Nature, steel offers the best defence against severe weather conditions like hail. “A steel roof will stand up to far more hail than a shingled roof,” said Thiessen. “When a shingle gets damaged, you get a leak. Steel will look banged-up, but it won’t leak, so you’re not getting water inside while you deal with your insurance company.” A steel roof can also cut you a break on insurance costs and typically has a 50-year warranty.
  • Colours – Steel now comes in many durable, long-lasting colours. “This is another area that’s changed significantly,” Thiessen said. “There are now dozens of colours available for steel siding. Also, because of advances in paint technology, manufacturers now offer a 40-year paint warranty.” Use different colours for roofing and siding, but also think about how to use colour as an accent – breaking up a neutral coloured wall, running along the bottom of a building or on flashings.
  • Finishes – Why should every steel building have the same flat exterior? Different siding profiles are now available, with textured metallic finishes and a greater variety of fittings.

These advancements in steel siding and cladding make barns and shops highly functional, visually appealing and ultra-long lasting. So why stop there? Thiessen sees more people going to steel for the family home.

“You want your home to last a long time, and the durability of steel really stands out for that purpose, too,” said Thiessen. “There are now all kinds of ways to dress up a house, just to give it the look you want. My advice is to come in and we can guide you through all your options.”
