Cool energy products control starch, supporting high performance while promoting animal health. Horses generally derive energy from three sources: fibre, starch and fat. High starch horse feed may lead to increased insulin levels, resulting in adverse short and long-term effects. Increased insulin levels may cause hyperactivity, obesity, insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome, developmental orthopedic diseases, ulcers, or tying up. Cool energy feeds provide a large proportion of energy from fat and digestible fibre as opposed to high levels of starch, mimicking a traditional diet of grazing forages. Co-op Feeds’ Cool Energy product line controls starch and includes specialized mineral packs, as well as fortified amino acid profiles. Based on five studies from the Cooperative Research Farms’ (CRF) Equine and Specialty Research Team and knowledge from CRF members, the product line is designed for horses at different stages of their lives and at different exertion levels.
Co-op Feeds: Working Horse Ration
This product is fortified with concentrated levels of vitamins, minerals and amino acids to support a low feeding rate. It is designed to be fed to regularly exercised horses fed high forage rations, although it is beneficial in any horse’s diet to reduce the incidence of laminitis or insulin resistance.
Co-op Feeds: Senior and Special Care Horse Ration
This feed maintains body condition and promotes bowel function to reduce the risk of colic. With a high feeding rate, it can replace the majority of hay in diets, making it an excellent option for horses with worn or missing teeth. The ration is ideal for horses with equine metabolic syndrome or Cushing’s syndrome and can help reduce the risk of developmental orthopedic diseases.
Co-op Feeds: Growing Horse Ration
This ration uses vitamins, minerals and balanced amino acid levels to support growth at the most important time in a horse’s lifecycle. The proper mineral and amino acid balance mixed with reduced starch levels will help decrease the risk of orthopedic diseases such as physitis.
All Co-op Feeds’ horse products and Cool Energy products contain biotin and thiamine to improve and maintain hoof and coat conditions, antioxidants to support immune systems and muscle functions and yeast cultures to aid in fibre digestion. Cool Energy products also contain organic selenium and minerals from a highly bioavailable chelated source.
