Excellence in Ag (EIA) is a scholarship and internship program that supports post-secondary students by funding their education, facilitating hands-on experiences in Co-ops across Western Canada, and nurturing their professional growth within the agribusiness sector.

For Chase Kozun, now the Co-op Agro Centre Manager in Colonsay, Sask., EIA was the ultimate career fuel. After completing three summers in the program, Kozun got his full-time placement just three days after graduation.
Inspired by ag
Chase Kozun grew up on a family farm in Carrot River, Sask. From very early on, he operated tractors and combines, later graduating to more equipment and helping out on neighbouring farms. Kozun then decided to study Agronomy at the University of Saskatchewan.
“One of my baseball coaches in high school was an agronomist. He took me out one day and showed me the ropes. We looked at a few fields, and I became really interested in the work,” said Kozun.
While studying, Kozun discovered the EIA program and saw the value in it. After being in the program for a year, he recommended it to his classmate, who is also now a full-time employee at Saskatoon Co-op.
Benefits for students
Kozun said he would still recommend the EIA program, as it brings substantial value to anyone looking to build a career in agriculture.
“Scholarship is one of the biggest advantages of the program, as it takes a lot of financial pressure off you when you are at school. On top of tuition coverage, you also make good money while working during the summer,” Kozun said.
“Another undeniable advantage is the ability to experience different locations,” he added. “During my time in EIA, I worked in Turtleford, Nipawin, and Cupar, Sask., all with their own unique conditions and approaches. In addition to experiencing the unique geographies, I got to build an incredible network of colleagues and growers that continues to benefit me to this day.”
Helping the industry grow
According to Darren Dale, Ag Sales Manager at Saskatoon Co-op, where Kozun works now, their division is grateful for the EIA program. Saskatoon Co-op has supported the program for ten years, benefiting both the students and their agro retail team.
“We have supported over ten undergrads over the years, four being offered full-time employment, three of whom are now part of our sales team, including Chase Kozun. Chase is a valuable team member and a great addition to our Colonsay location. It is truly a rewarding experience to support students who have a passion for the ag industry on their development journey,” said Dale.
