Next generation canola system is here

TruFlex™ canola with Roundup Ready® Technology is Monsanto’s next generation canola system.

Trish Jordan, Public Affairs Director with Monsanto Canada, said the TruFlex system will bring several benefits to canola growers.

“New genetics will help deliver higher yield potential and the improved crop system offers better weed control and crop safety over Genuity® Roundup Ready® canola.”

Flexibility in spray timing

With the new herbicide-tolerance trait, producers can get up to 10 to 14 more spray days at in-crop timing.

That means the application window for Roundup WeatherMAX® herbicide will extend past the six-leaf stage all the way to first flower when applying sequential rates of 0.67 litres per acre.

Rate options

TruFlex canola with Roundup Ready Technology also provides flexibility in rates for tough weed challenges:

  • Dandelions: Will help enable season-long control.
  • Foxtail barley: 99-per-cent control in Monsanto Technology Development Trials.
  • Wild buckwheat: Will allow for control of medium buckwheat (four-to-six-leaf) with Roundup WeatherMAX herbicide at a rate of approximately 1 L/ac and large buckwheat (past six-leaf) at a rate of 1.33 L/ac.

TruFlex canola with Roundup Ready Technology is not currently available for commercial sale or commercial planting. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Health Canada granted full food, feed and environmental safety approval of TruFlex canola in June 2012. The product has been approved for import in several export markets. Import approval from China is pending and should be granted in the first quarter of 2019.

TruFlex demonstrations

Ahead of the expected launch of TruFlex in 2019, field demonstrations were held across Western Canada in 2018. About 40 farmers grew approximately 13 acres of TruFlex canola on 30- to 40-acre sites under stewarded conditions to provide growers the opportunity to see the performance of TruFlex. TruFlex acres were managed with pollen traps, isolation distances, and borders.

If you didn’t see a demonstration yourself, speak with your local Co-op Grow Team member who can provide you with more information about how this new technology can benefit your farm.
